At Our Lady and St Joseph Brooms Catholic Primary School we recognise that all pupils are entitled to a quality of provision that will enable them to achieve their potential.
At Our Lady and St Joseph Brooms Catholic Primary School we recognise that all pupils are entitled to a quality of provision that will enable them to achieve their potential. We believe in positive intervention, removing barriers to learning, raising expectations and levels of achievement and working in partnership with other agencies in order to provide a positive educational experience for all our pupils including those with a special educational need or disability.
Most of our school policies can be found on the website or available on request from the school office, please visit our policies page for a list.
Teaching Learning and the Curriculum
Our Lady and St Joseph’s Brooms Catholic Primary School strives to be inclusive and will endeavour to support every child regardless of their level of need. All pupils follow the National Curriculum at a level and a pace that is appropriate to their abilities. At times and when it is felt appropriate, modifications to the curriculum may be implemented.
We talk to parents/carers if they think their child has a special educational need and let them know what special help the school is giving
To successfully match pupil ability to the curriculum there are some actions we may take to achieve this:
At our school we have experience of supporting children and young people with a wide range of needs.
Types of special educational needs can include:
The school provides data on the levels and types of need to the Local Authority. This is collected through the school census.
At Our Lady and t Joseph’s Brooms Catholic School, we believe that inclusive education means providing all pupils with appropriate education and support alongside their peers. The Curriculum is all the planned activities that the school organises in order to promote learning, personal growth and development.
It includes not only the formal requirements of the National Curriculum, but also the range of additional opportunities that the school organises in order to enrich the experiences of our children. Our curriculum also includes the social aspects that are essential for life-long learning.
Pupils who require additional access to personal and social communication interventions receive these within the school day and these are delivered by trained school staff as well as a school counsellor, speech therapists, family workers etc. as appropriate.
Most children and young people will have their Special Educational Needs met in mainstream schools through good classroom practice. This is called Quality First Teaching.
At our school, we follow a graduated support approach which is called “Assess, Plan, Do, Review”.
This means that we will:
As part of this approach, we will produce a SEN Support Plan that describes the provision that we will make to meet a child’s Special Educational Needs and agreed outcomes. Parents and Carers will be fully involved in this process.
A small percentage of children and young people with significant learning difficulties might need an assessment that could lead to an Education, Health and Care Plan. Full details can be found on the Local Offer website.
You can find details of how we adapt the curriculum and make it more accessible for pupils with SEN below:
Our Lady and St Joseph’s Brooms School is a Catholic Primary school and employs a number of teaching assistants experienced at working with children with special educational needs. We are part of the Bishop Wilkinson Catholic Education Trust and also seek support from their SEND Lead Teacher as well as the Local Authority team as appropriate.
A Special Educational Need can be a number of different things. For example, a child may be having problems with reading, number work or behaviour, which can be helped by putting extra support in at school and by working in partnership with parents. It may also be due to a disability which makes it harder for a child to use the same educational facilities that the school provides for the majority of children. For some children this may be a temporary difficulty, while others may have a long term need for special help.
Staff Continued Professional development is high priority and therefore staff attend relevant training related to SEND where appropriate. This supports us in removing or reducing barriers to learning for our most vulnerable pupils.
Whole staff training is also accessed so that staff are well informed to identify and respond to individual needs. We employ adaptive teaching strategies so that all pupils can access learning appropriately in all subject areas.
The school works in partnership with parents, feeder nurseries and the Local Authority Learning Difficulties and Disabilities Inclusion Services to assess and identify pupils with SEND.
If you would like to discuss your SEND requirements in detail please contact the school to arrange an appointment.
Finance
The budget allocation is agreed between our school and the Local Authority at the beginning of each financial year. Detail of how this money is used to support children and young people with SEND is shown below. This is monitored each term by the Governing Committee.
The SEND Local Offer sets out a range of additional services and provision across education, health, social care and across the public, voluntary and independent sectors. This will detail information about what is available to support families both with and without an EHC Plan. The SENCO of Our Lady and St Joseph’s Brooms Catholic Primary School is Mrs Jackman and will help parents/carers of pupils with SEN to identify appropriate provision that may be available through the Local Offer. School may also signpost parents to SENDiASS who may offer specific advice, guidance and support, where required.
At Our Lady and St Joseph Brooms Catholic Primary School, we have an allocation of general support for SEND and allocation of funding for individuals who receive top up or have an EHCP.
This is used to support children and young people with SEND by:
Our Lady and St Joseph School uses this money to fund the following:
The Community of Learning ( COL2) to which Our Lady and St Joseph Brooms Catholic Primary School belongs, receives additional funding to meet the shared needs and priorities of partner schools. This funding has been used to support training for staff including Speech and Language Learning / Speech Link , Motor Skills training, preparation for Education, Health and Social care Planning. It has also been used to address Speech Therapy waiting lists for several years through direct employment of a Speech Therapist and assistant working with pupils in our schools. We also have access to a trained counsellor from Northernlights Counselling Service. She works in school one morning a fortnight and pupils can be referred into the service when appropriate.
The LA currently allocates top up funding for pupils with complex needs. This money is allocated to individual support of pupils. Costed Provision Maps detailing the cost of interventions and support for individual pupils are produced to ensure the cost of provision, over and above the AWPU funding is provided in the future.
If a child has complex special educational needs, we could also receive additional funding from the Local Authority to meet the agreed outcomes.
A Costed Provision Map will be developed in liaison with the child, young person, parent or carer.

Pastoral, Medical and Social Support
At Our Lady and St Joseph’s Brooms Catholic Primary School we actively seek the involvement of parents and carers and other bodies to educate and meet the needs of children with SEN including external agencies and initiatives. The professionals within these agencies offer a wealth of knowledge and expertise for us to draw upon and ensure we meet the needs of all SEND children, no matter how complex.
Each year children with a wide range of SEND attend our school and we continually strive to cater for their unique needs and ensure they develop a range of skills during their time with us. As a result, we have built relationships with a large network of external agencies to consult with and offer support to children and staff respectively. We have created a list of the different agencies we work with regularly. If you would like further details about any of these, please contact the school for further details.
Pupils are well supported in pastoral and social needs and this is a strength of our small school. Small cohorts and a ‘family ethos’ contribute to our pastoral and social care. Teaching Assistants deliver group and individual packages of support in social communication, Managing Feelings and Getting Along. CAMHS work regularly with children and families to support emotional needs. The school also refers pupils to the Emotional Wellbeing School Nursing Team.
Whole staff training is delivered for caring for pupils with medical needs such as allergies, asthma etc and this is seen as a whole staff responsibility. Pupils with additional needs have a medical care plan that is available and communicated to all staff.
Medication is administered by the school staff. Advice from medical professionals is adhered to. Parents must sign a consent form to allow staff to administer medication.

How do we consult with our SEN pupils
Teachers/SENCO and Support Staff will work with children and young people to identify the support needed to meet agreed outcomes. The provision is planned and interventions are allocated to individual needs. The children take an active role with setting their targets, discussing them with the Class Teacher/SENCO. The children have regular meetings with support staff to discuss their progress and support.
Ensuring that all children attending our school receive provision that maximises their enjoyment and achievement is central to all we offer.
We are committed to working with parents and carers to identify their child’s needs and support. Parents and carers will be involved throughout the process. Both the SENCO and Headteacher are recent appointments to the school and endeavour to improve consultation practices through:

Class 2 had some very special visitors this afternoon. A huge thank you to Sister Teresa, Sister Linzi and Sister Jessie for coming into school to speak with our class. The children had lots of questions to ask and learned a lot from the sisters. Thank you for the wonderful gifts you have given us.
